FAQ
Is Aikido effective for self-defense?
Yes, but the approach is unique. Aikido is purely defensive - there are no offensive techniques. You learn to redirect an attacker's momentum, neutralizing threats through pins or throws. The calm that comes with being able to handle pressure develops naturally through consistent practice.
Is Aikido a good workout?
Yes, though it evolves as you progress. Early on you're focused on learning to move and fall safely, so don't be surprised if your first few classes leave you more winded than you expected. As techniques become more natural and you're moving without thinking, it becomes a solid cardio workout. It can get pretty physical too.
Will I learn to use weapons?
Weapons training is not a regular part of our curriculum. Classes focus on the core mechanics of Aikido - entering into an opponent's space and redirecting their momentum through direct physical contact.
How often are the classes and what are the fees?
Classes are held twice a week - Tuesdays at 5:30 pm and Sundays at 3:30 pm. For fees and enrollment information see our Enrolment page.
Is insurance required?
Yes, insurance is required for regular members. See our Enrolment page for details.
Do I need to be in great shape to start?
Not at all. Aikido works with an attacker's energy rather than raw strength, so fitness level isn't a barrier. You'll get stronger, more flexible, and better conditioned just by showing up regularly.
Can I try a class before committing?
Absolutely. Come in comfortable athletic wear (or a gi if you have one), jump on the mats, and see what it's all about. First class is free.
What should I wear for my first class?
If you don't have a gi yet, comfortable athletic wear that covers your knees and elbows is perfect. We practice barefoot, so no special footwear is required. Bring water, and an open mind.
